Important warning about bank fraud and impersonation scams

In line with the growing numbers of transactions through Accounts/Cards, cybercriminals are continuously evolving their methods to deceive users. In order to enhance vigilance and ensure the safety of information and assets of our valued customers, Vietnam International Bank (VIB) respectfully provides the following update on emerging fraud schemes and recommends safe transaction practices:
Fraud risks to pay attention to in banking transactions:
1. Impersonating the Bank to approach customers with the following scenarios:
- Support customers to take biometric authentication, entice customers to add friend via online messaging applications and request to provide personal information, images of citizen identity card, customers’ portrait and/ or video calls in order to collect customers' voice and gestures for impersonation, account appropriation or use for other illegal related-purposes.
- Conducting advisory calls such as increasing credit scores to open cards, assisting activating card, credit limit increases, card cancellation, or offering promotions like annual fee waivers, cash withdrawals from the card, or payment/shopping discounts, followed by requests for customers to provide sensitive information including card number, CVV, OTP code to carry out fraudulent and impersonation transactions.
2. Impersonating websites and public service applications (such as VNeID app, Ministry of Public Security, General Department of Taxation, etc.) that contain malware to gain control over and take over the customer's device, resulting in transactions not authorized by the customer.
VIB fully commits to having no partnership with any external entities to offer services such as credit card limit increases and other illicit services through calls from spoofed phone numbers or fraudulent emails.
Preventive measures against fraud in banking transactions:
Please notice:
- Biometric authentication will only be performed on the MyVIB app or at VIB branches/transaction offices.
- DO NOT provide personal information/card information/bank account information, OTP to anyone. VIB never asks customers to provide OTP or login password.
- DO NOT install applications from unknown sources via links or application files and DO NOT grant accessibility permissions to the application.
- DO NOT engage in activities such as selling, renting, lending, or opening payment accounts, which can potentially be exploited for illegal transactions. These actions are considered illegal under the law.
- SHOULD block cards and payment accounts immediately (via MyVIB application or contact Hotline 1900 2200/ 1800 8195) when suspecting signs of fraud.
- SHOULD report to the authorities if you detect cases requiring money transfer, providing personal information, card/bank account information.
- SHOULD actively adjust daily card transaction limit and daily online transaction limit according to needs.
- SHOULD regularly stay up-to-date methods and tricks of criminals on the media and VIB’s official media channels:
